What does a 10 panel hair follicle test for? ›

The 10 Panel Drug Test (Hair) will identify the presence or absence of ten (10) different classes of commonly abused or misused drugs and/or their metabolites. As a laboratory-based test, this panel includes a routine screen for each drug class, as well as any necessary confirmation testing.

For each hair sample, the nurse will collect around 200 hairs, about the width of a pencil, ideally from the posterior vortex (crown) region at the back of the head (see figs 1 and 2). They will cut within 1mm of the scalp, and will do this as discretely as possible, avoiding any obvious patches.

Although longer samples of hair can be tested for drug exposure over a longer period of time, a standard sample of hair from the scalp is 1.5 inches and provides information about approximately 90 days of past drug exposure.

Location. Each collected sample should be taken in small portions from at least four to five different locations of the scalp. The recommended areas for collection are the nape of the neck, posterior vertex and posterior temporal regions.
