Holy guacamole, this is so good! This chunky guacamole recipe is easy to prepare, and you can make any tweaks you like to make it palate-perfect. You will need avocados, which are of course the star of the dish, along with tomatoes and green onions. The addition of chilies, lime juice and cilantro finishes the homemade guacamole to perfection. If you are looking for an easy guacamole recipe for traditional guacamole, this is for YOU!
There’s nothing quite like chunky guac with ripe avocados, fresh lime juice and other simple ingredients. Whether you serve it as a party dip or you have your perfect chunky guacamole with crispy tortilla chips while watching a movie on taco Tuesday, you’ll find it even more delicious than guac from top Mexican restaurants. It’s a real crowd-pleaser.
Chunky Guacamole Ingredients
There are many avocado recipes to choose from, pretty much all of which include similar fresh ingredients. Those would be the avocados of course, along with tomatoes, onions, cilantro, chilies, lime juice (or lemon juice if you prefer), and a pinch of salt. Some people also like to add garlic, so you can do that if you are a garlic fan.
Part of the reason for lime juice being in the recipe is flavour. Besides that though, it helps to stop the avocado turning brown. A nice, fresh looking green guacamole is always appetizing. Why not try this on Cinco de Mayo?
You can also use citrus juice on cut apples and pears to stop them turning brown. Lemon juice isn’t as traditional as lime juice but it will also work and add a nice tang to this easy guacamole recipe.
What to Serve with Guacamole
Rather than considering the guac as a condiment, why not make it the star of the dish? This homemade guacamole can be served as a side dish of course. It goes pretty well with any kind of Tex-Mex or Mexican cooking. You might like it with seared steak nachos, Buffalo Wild Wings street tacos, or these fiesta chicken stuffed poblano peppers.
You can also serve it as an appetizer, paired with crispy tortilla chips. A chunky guacamole recipe is always going to be a hit, whatever you choose to serve it with. Try it on toast with a slice of ham, or add it to a cheese sandwich.
You might find your own ways to enjoy this tasty green treat. Not hungry enough for a full meal but feeling a bit peckish? A bowl of tortilla chips served with a chunky guacamole recipe usually hits the spot!
History of Traditional Guacamole
Are you curious about the history behind homemade guacamole? It dates back further than you might imagine. All the way back to Central America’s Aztec Empire in fact, which was the 1500s. Avocados have actually been cultivated and enjoyed as far back as 500 BC in Mexico, South America and Central America.
This fruit was very popular among the Aztecs who enjoyed it as ‘ahuaca-mulli’ which means avocado mash or avocado purée. This centuries-old recipe was made with simply avocados, chili peppers and tomatoes.
The Spanish settlers began to add their own touches, such as cilantro, lime juice and onions. In time the name changed to guacamole. Spain didn’t have the best climate for growing avocados so this recipe stayed in Mexico.
These days, guacamole is popular all over the world. It is sometimes served in a molcajete, which is a type of mortar and pestle made of rough stone.
Tips for Making Perfect Homemade Guacamole
Here’s a top tip for you: don’t skimp on the quality of ingredients when preparing traditional guacamole. The fresher and better your ingredients, the better this easy guacamole recipe is going to turn out, and your taste buds are going to love it.
Try making avocado toast – the chunky texture of this authentic guacamole would be perfect for that. Oh, and avocado quesadillas are also amazing – just swap sliced avocado for some of this guac.
The avocados should be perfectly ripe, neither too hard nor mushy. Also use fresh lime juice (or lemon juice if you prefer) rather than the bottled kind. Again, it just yields a fresher tasting result in this chunky guacamole recipe.
Other avocado recipes might use ingredients like paprika or black pepper. Although jalapeños are a popular chili choice for traditional classic recipe guacamole. Serrano peppers are another option for those who like it hot! As for the onion, you can use red onion or even white onion instead of the green onions.
Ripe avocado is the main ingredient in a chunky guacamole recipe, so you should use more of those than any other ingredient. Tomatoes are a close second in most recipes though. This is because the natural sweetness of tomatoes goes so well with the rich creaminess of the avocado.
Even if you are using plenty of lime juice to stop the avocado turning brown, it still will over time. This is why leftover guacamole should be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It is the exposure to oxygen which causes it to go brown. This can happen with any easy guacamole recipe, so keep some avocado aside to add just before serving to ‘top up’ the green!

Ingredients
- 4 avocados peeled and stoned
- 4 tomatoes seeded and finely chopped
- 6 green onions finely chopped
- 2 chilis seeded and finely chopped
- 4 Tbsp. lime juice
- 2 Tbsp. cilantro chopped
Instructions
Skin the tomatoes by Blanching. Cut a cross in the top and add to scalding water for 2 minutes only. The skin will come off very easily after that.
Chop the green onions, de-seed and chop the chilies. Depending on how hot you like the Guacamole, taste test the chili. You’ll know how much you should add after that. I usually stick to two and go from there.
Add the lime and lemon juice, salt and pepper and chopped cilantro.
I like to add the avocado last as that gives more ‘green-time’. Chop the avocados in half and remove the pits. Keep one or two on hand to add back to the guacamole to help preserve the colour. Using a knife score the avocados then squeeze into the bowl.
Mix well and serve with tortilla chips.
