When we were first married, and I was beginning my recipe collection, I asked some of my friends if anyone had a granola recipe that they really liked. Granola is one of my favorite cereals and I knew that having a great basic recipe was a must! I lucked out when my friend, Mary, shared her mother-in-law’s recipe with me. It’s been a staple in our home ever since! The original recipe called for 1 1/2 c. brown sugar. I use a combination of honey and sugar, and both ways are delicious.
This is a crazy delicious coconut almond granola, and it takes only minutes to gather and mix the ingredients. Couldn’t be simpler! We eat granola in a bowl with milk 90% of the time, but also like snacking on handfuls of it as well as sprinkling it on top of yogurt.
The Best Grains and Mix-Ins for Granola
The main ingredient in granola is oats. For this recipe the best oats to use are old fashioned rolled oats. You can use quick oats as well. In fact, it’s what I used for this batch because it’s what I had on hand! The flavor is the same, but you don’t get as many clusters. The recipe calls for 8 cups of oats. You can drop that down to 7 cups of oats and substitute a mixture of flax seed, wheat germ, quinoa, or any other grain you’d like to add.
What kind of oil do you use in Granola?
I use canola oil, but you can also use corn or coconut oil.
The Best Mix Ins for Granola
We like raisins and almonds, but you can add pecans, walnuts, dried cramberries or dates! Just make sure to add any dried fruit after the granola comes out of the oven. They do not need to be added in before baking.
One of my favorite parts about this granola is the coconut. It toasts perfectly while baking and adds such a delicious flavor!

Granola tends to be a magical mix of rolled oats, nuts and honey or maple syrup. It can be eaten for breakfast or as a midday snack, served over yogurt or mixed into your favorite baked goods.
Advantage homemade. Both granolas have whole oats as their main ingredient, but the Kellogg's is high in refined sugar and contains palm oil. The homemade version contains protein-rich pecans and uses only a small amount of honey, brown sugar, and vegetable oil. It took me an hour to make granola from scratch.
Add granola to your trail mix the next time you need to refuel on an outdoor adventure. Make granola yogurt bark! Spread your favorite yogurt on a sheet pan and sprinkle with granola and any other toppings you want, like dried fruit or chocolate chips. Freeze and then break into pieces for a sweet snack.
You can enjoy these maple almond granola clusters with a spoon as you would any granola cereal, in a bowl with regular/nondairy milk or yogurt, but they also make such a great on-the-go snack. Toss some in a take-along container, add them to your favorite trail mix, or sprinkle them on top of oatmeal or ice cream.
"If it's not high in sugar, one daily serving of granola paired with milk or yogurt can be a great way to start the day," says Abbie Gellman, M.S., RD, a culinary and nutrition expert. Less than 7 grams of sugar per serving is a good goal. Saturated fat. A little coconut oil never hurt anyone.
Crunchy, sweet, and satisfying, granola is a popular breakfast topping or daily snack. It tastes good — and it's good for you. There are plenty of ways to enjoy it. Sprinkle a little on top of yogurt or ice cream, mix it with milk, or add hot water for a nourishing meal that will warm you up on a cold day.
Yes, granola can be eaten daily. As part of a balanced diet and if the portions are checked. Go for healthier options with less added sugars and saturated fats to get the most out of it.
Granola may prompt weight gain if eaten in excess, as it can be high in calories from added fats and sugars. What's more, sugar is linked to chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.
Oats are an excellent source of beta-glucan, which is a fiber that helps reduce LDL and overall cholesterol levels—two risk factors for getting heart disease. Improve gut health. Granola can help increase the levels of healthy bacteria in the gut compared to other breakfast cereals.
Try adding it to your favorite smoothie to give it an extra boost of fiber from the whole grains, healthy fats and added flavor. It's also an easy way to increase calories in a smoothie. Personally, I think it would be a delicious addition to my Strawberry Peanut Butter Smoothie!
How much granola should you eat a day? The prevailing belief is that you should consume 45-50g of granola daily. This is frequently the recommended portion size on the granola cereal package. Suggested portion sizes are often 45g, only about three tablespoons full.
Having some complex carbs like oats (try a quick bowl of fruit topped oatmeal) before bed can be helpful for sleep. But any grains, cereals, muffins, or granola that has a lot of added sugar will be stimulating, making it harder to fall asleep.
Are you a fan of cereals, but find yourself bored with the same old bowl of whole grains? Bring your favorite breakfast to life with a ½ cup of granola. Granola can also be its own cereal, just add milk and enjoy. For a boost of nutrients, add nuts, seeds and freeze-dried fruit.

Granola can be enjoyed on its own as a midday snack. This makes it perfect for when you are short on time. Just grab a handful of granola and go! In my opinion, chunky granola made with honey has the best snackable crunchy texture because it's made in a way that gives you larger chunks of granola.
As granola contains all the goodness of healthy nutrients including grains, nuts, seeds, and dried fruits, eating it daily in breakfast is a good habit as it not only provides your body all the necessary nutrients but also is a healthier food alternative with no fat or cholesterol.
